Trains in Sydney

Posted on by austen

Public transportation is not as cool as I thought it would be. It was new and kinda exciting to take the trains to work, but its getting old quick. There have been issues with the trains two times in the last two weeks that have made me late for work. WHy is it so difficult.

Im gonna try something new. I will continue to keep this blog, but I’m also going to put up a photo inspiration blog. I will try and update a new photo every day. No promises. Click here or the little light bulb on the bottom right corner of the page. Doesn’t work. Page load time is too long.

Confused Weather

Posted on by austen

The weather in Sydney has been more confused over the last week than any other place I have ever been. Hot humid one day with an eighty degree low, to pouring rain with gusts of cool wind the next. In the words of my good German friend, “man, da weather is confused”.

Happy Australia Day! I got a day off today because apparently today is an Australian holiday. It’s raining off and on and very humid, but nice to have a day off in the middle of the week.

Work Week One

Posted on by austen

First week of work done. Still getting settled into my new job and taking the subway everywhere. Its always a new experience walking through the cross to the train. Work is going well. Long hours, but I have a lot of responsibility and creative freedom.
Lauren left for New Zealand this morning. She has to be there for a week to get her visa sorted. Keep checking in on her blog for updates.

Catching Up

I have been lazy and distracted from my blog for the last couple of weeks, so here is what’s been going on; We stayed at John’s farm for two amazing weeks. We looked after his dogs, hung out with Mate, his “alpha” female bird, Lauren ran around and talked to the horses, we went to the beach (Kill-care and Terrigal) and last but not least, desperately searched for an apartment in Sydney. More specifically we searched for a spot in Paddington. We quickly discovered how difficult and competitive apartment shopping is in Sydney. Instead of contacting an agent and being shown a house on your own time, they do it a little different here. An agent arranges a showing at a specific time during the week (whether it works for you or not they couldn’t care less) and half the city barges in the front door at the same time. Full on cattle-call. To make it worse, if you find a place you like, you need to be prepared to throw cash down on the counter and rent the place right then and right there.
After a couple of failed attempts, I knew it was going to be difficult to find a place in Paddington, especially on our budget. I told Lauren I was ok with anything as long as we weren’t in the Cross (Kings Cross, the red-light seedy portion of Sydney).

Guess where we ended up finding the apartment we couldn’t turn down? Yep… A block from Kings Cross.
We got lucky on this one. Our friends Paddy and Shelby knew the owner and got us an appointment to see the house before it went on the market. I was a little skeptical because of the location, but I got over that as soon as I walked in. The apartment was just completely re-modeled. New everything. We have built in washer/dryer and dishwasher. Big upgrade from our Laguna house. The neighborhood really isn’t that bad. We are technically in Darlinghurst, which is really nice. There are coffee shops and restaurants a block from our house. It’s actually a really nice place to walk around and hang out. We can still walk up to Paddington or down to Rushcutters bay. And even better, I’m only 15 minutes to work by train.
Check Laurens blog for pictures of the apartment. I think she’s going to try and post pictures of the apartment before and after we move in.
In the last couple of days we have been back and forth to my least favorite place on earth. IKEA. I hate it so much. Its not even cheap. Its just bad furniture that you have to put together yourself. We ended up getting most of our furniture on Gumtree.com. Gumtree is like Craigslist back home.
I start work tomorrow morning. Ill be posting more this week. Promise.
